MFL

At Monks Abbey Primary School, we strive to ensure that all children leave us literate, overcoming any disadvantage that may exist. We are truly blessed with children from many different cultures and backgrounds, providing our school with over 50 different spoken languages. MAPS is fortunate to have many pupils who are bi-lingual and able to share their experiences and knowledge with their peers. As outlined in our school vision, we believe lessons and activities should stimulate the children’s minds and spark their imagination. We intend to do this by providing engaging lessons through various learning sources and high-quality delivery. We also want pupils to leave us numerate and literate, we should aim to ensure pupil are given the opportunity to do so in Foreign Languages. Our vision clearly states that where disadvantage exists, we should do our upmost to overcome it. Languages are extremely beneficial to pupil for their future careers, we should therefore ensure we give pupils the opportunities to become confident in speaking another language to allow for future opportunities.  Finally, we intend to be a place that inspires lifelong learning and give pupils an opportunity to have happy and worthwhile life and career. Our pupils that face disadvantages that can affect their future life and career will need the opportunity to use Languages to gain access to high quality employment opportunities.  Using our vision, we intend to make sure pupils at MAPS are given the opportunity to make progress in languages to overcome the barriers they face after their years with us.

It has been outlined how effective learning languages can be to the potential careers and futures of children. With different challenges we face at MAPS we aim to provide a stimulating curriculum with various teaching and learning opportunities to support all learners. The curriculum will aim to provide all pupils with speaking, listening, reading and writing opportunities for pupils in Key Stage 2, and overcome barriers where needed to ensure attainment levels are high for all learners. Pupils will learn Spanish in school, whilst being given opportunities to learn the basics of various languages.

As we implement the way the MFL curriculum is intended we will be able to provide pupils with opportunities to learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language. Pupils will also experience learning basic greetings, commands, questions, numbers and colours of other languages. Pupils will become good language detectors, using their knowledge of Spanish to help detect meaning of other languages.
