Science

At Monks Abbey, we recognise the vital importance of Science and Scientific Enquiry. We endeavour to provide all of our children with an engaging, exciting, fun and practical curriculum, which encourages the children to ask questions and make their own decision within their learning. We hope to create future scientists who will endeavour to go on a help make changes for our next generation. The way we ensure this happens at Monks Abbey is by rigorous planning, following the national curriculum objectives, ensuring we provide opportunities for curiosity and interest across all areas. At the heart of our progressive curriculum is Scientific enquiry. This is crucial within our school to help the children secure the working scientifically skills. Wherever possible, we aim to teach and model these skills, to give our children the methods needed to answer their own questions. We aim to equip them with the skills to continually ask questions about the world around them. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the Working Scientifically skills are built-on and developed throughout children’s time at the school so that they can apply their
knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments and investigation, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently, being familiar with scientific terminology and, most importantly, to continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

There is always a buzz around school when children are learning in Science. The hive of imagination, questions and discoveries is infectious. By providing such a rich, progressive and organised approach to Science, we are giving our children the best opportunities to develop as scientists. Children are able to talk positively about their experiences in Science and can often remember the practical investigations vividly, giving detailed, comprehensive and vocabulary rich explanations about their learning. To see our children thrive in this area of the curriculum is at the heart of what we do. Many of our children are not provided with such experiences outside of school, so it is imperative we show them in as many different ways as possible.
